Nancy,
You wrote, "I am getting very concerned about the tendency to dismiss anyone
who has anything to do with artificial milk as biased, unethical or
intellectually dishonest. Some of the statements are bordering on libel..."
My understanding of libel is that libel is making "false" statements with the
intent to harm the reputation of another person. The statements I made about
Dr. Ziegler in that post were referenced. He was the author of a research
paper in which they state their funding and in particular state that he received
funding for speaking from various infant formula companies. The HMBANA
website does state he is an advisor and a newspaper article describes him as a
medical director to the Iowa human milk bank.
NO WHERE in my post did I state or describe HMBANA as "sell-outs." That is
your wording, not mine. NO WHERE in that post or in any other post to Lactnet
have I written about Paula Meier. I did not know that she received funding
from Ross. No WHERE in any post have I described anyone as unethical or
intellectually dishonest. Again, these are your words.
You wrote, "Of course I would prefer that no research on nutrition is done
with formula company money, but as long as there is honest disclosure of support
and involvement, I can live with reality."
We are all living with the infant formula reality. I would suggest that
having people who are paid by the infant formula industry involved in human milk
banking is an entirely different situation than having your research funded by
the infant formula industry.
