Rebecca,
I'm not an MD so this is not the information you need. However, I do want
to send you and the GP warm support in regard to your work with this woman
and mother.
Would you or the GP be able to post your question on the Academy of
Breastfeeding Medicine's site?
It certainly seems that the honey in the packing could be a contributing
factor in this mother's slow healing process.
Much of what surgeons do in resolving health problems is to cut the problem
out of a person's body. Arrogance can be found in all professions, but I
find arrogance in health care, particularly among physicians, to be so very
disturbing. If only a surgical subspecialty existed that would remove
arrogance and ignorance in a timely manner, followed by a
substitution/"implanting" of humility and knowledge instead. After all,
has any among them, to date, set the world on its ear with a cure for AIDS
or even one type of cancer? Should that come to pass, wouldn't/shouldn't
such work lend itself to even deeper humility? I believe the ignorance and
arrogance among so many members of the medical profession (for
example, "the surgeon blames the milk production on keeping the infection
going") plays a significant role in the malpractice and litigation crises
in our society.
Hoping you receive prompt, helpful responses from MDs,
Debra Swank RN BSN IBCLC RLC
Winchester, Virginia USA
