Just to add my sample of 2 kids to this discussion. My son was a
spitter. He spit up (not vomited) after every feeding, just small
amounts. My ped (very brfd-friendly) said it was an incompetent valve
where the esophagus goes into the stomach and he'd outgrow it. So, just
reasoning it out, I started feeding him on one breast per feed, just as
we are now saying for over-supply. The reason I did it was that I
reasoned he would get less at a time so his tummy wouldn't be so full
and he'd spit up less. Well, it worked because he didn't spit up near
as much after that and he did outgrow it entirely around 9 months. No
other symptoms. He grew like a weed, not terribly fussy. His younger
sister, otoh, didn't spit up. Like never. And she turned out to be
highly allergic to dairy. Her symptoms were slow-growth, VERY fussy and
fidgety (from abdominal pain I figured.) She had swollen nasal
passages; slimy, smelly stools and gas, and little white pimples on her
face (which btw were the last thing to disappear two weeks after
discontinuing all dairy). Oh, and a couple of ear infections in the
first few months which did not recur once I eliminated dairy. She was a
miserable little mess when dairy was part of my diet, but rarely did she
spit up. I have seen cases of reflux where I felt intervention was
needed, meds or whatever because it was obvious baby was having trouble
feeding. However, I think babies who might just be spitters like my son
might also be getting this label and accompanying meds when milder
interventions would do the job. Just to finish the story, my son is 21
and no food allergies. My daughter is almost 19 and highly lactose
intolerant!

Happy New Year to all breastfeeding advocates and warriors everywhere,
Marsha
