Cold intolerance -I think someone else may have already brought this
up,..but let me echo the hypothyroidism possibility. Cold intolerance is
often the first discernible sign (was mine! and I also developed it in my
third year nursing Ryan.

Military Mom - there are definitely strategies she can use to prevent her
wishes being ignored,...like a pre-emptive meeting with the Patient
Representative...please let the Mom know she is welcome to email me
directly. I was a military mom to be who did the birth plan, made my wishes
known, and they were all ignored. I've learned from my mistakes and can
hopefully give her some pointers.

Welcome Back Jessica - Jessica, I know I'm late responding as I am catching
up on a weeks worth now, but wanted to applaud your determination, I know
how alone you can feel when it's not going well and everyone else thinks
you are being a fanatic for not just giving up. I decided myself to become
an IBCLC BECAUSE of the experience I had delivering and trying to nurse my
one and only, and my ordeal only lasted a couple weeks. But I can see why so
many give up without appropriate support. My little one didn't get a good
feed for a week, compliments of me being given IV Demerol without my
knowledge when an epidural they talked me into (teaching hospital)didn't
work....you can imagine how lethargic, unable to latch Ryan was. had so
much bad advice or non-support, including my labor coach Mom/OB nurse who
kept suggesting I give Ryan formula because she couldn't bear to hear him
cry when I was starving him. Some nights we went through an hour of
screaming before he'd latch. The only ones who were helpful and supported
me were the LC and LLL leader who did the home visits, and a chiropractor
who came to my house to adjust him at one week. My lesson was in picking
your advocates carefully and doing your own research beforehand.

and while I'm on my soapbox..wanted to bring up a tidbit I've not seen
posted (at least not lately, I'm new here). If any of you run into a mom
with a skin tag on the nipple, please investigate the possibility of
removal prior to delivery. I had one, which I pointed out to my OB's and
even my LC, none of whom were concerned, and had a "wait and see" attitude.
Well, what I "saw" is a painful blister forming off the end of the tag
everytime Ryan tried to nurse,..and once the nipple stretched, so did the
tag,...and the blister,...until they gagged Ryan and he "latched off".
Nobody wanted to remove it while I was lactating, so I ended up nursing on
one side,..and pumping the other.

Trish Malley, IBCLC, Mom to Ryan (6) RN , LTC
