colostrum - i don't spend alot of time on it however I do have to spend some
time clarifying: parents think all they have to give is colostrum and
they've taken care of baby's immune system for life. they also don't realize
that the mature milk has antibodies as well. my new teaching is to let
parents know that colostrum is best fed to the infant very soon after birth,
as it is meant to 'coat the baby's system' BEFORE the baby gets exposed to
germs etc. (hosp setting) So if the baby goes to the nursery and comes back
to mom 5, 6, 8 hrs later it is not the best time to get the colostrum, nor
after several bottles of formula. i also often show moms they do have
colostrum by using the very very useful RPS technique. MANY moms believe
they have NOTHING AT ALL but when they see the colostrum after RPS they seem
very encouraged and motivated.
2. blissful bf - i do think that showing everyday moms doing everyday things
w/ baby bf would be helpful. i think moms bf when it is 'convenient' and
don't make the committment to bf all the time.
