One of my fondest memories was attending my parents' small church in southern
Appalachia for Easter when Stacy was 6 weeks old. After all the ladies oohed
and awed over her and we settled down, Stacy wanted to nurse--she flipped into
position and made the "turn it on noises". The minister's wife turned around
and said " Go ahead and nurse that baby. Don't you think babies have been
nursed in churches for thousands of years?". In the Appalachian mountains
growing up, I saw mothers nusing everywhere, and this incident made me feel like I
had arrived into the " sorority" of motherhood.
