Subject: Asacol and breastfeeding
I am a pediatric nurse practitioner and have a question concerning Asacol
and breastfeeding. I have a mother of a 2 week old who has ulcerative
colitis and needs to go back on Asacol. How safe is it for her to
breastfeed? Dr. Hale's book says it is moderately safe. Are there any long
term studies on Asacol and breastfeeding. The pediatrician I work with is
against her breastfeeding. Any thoughts?
It is available in suppository form. May help in her circumstances depending
on location of ulcerations . I made dietary changes that also
helped.Increased fiber - Eliminated corn, peanuts, milk. and was able to stop all meds
eventually.
