Pat,
As a response to your Lacnet post about cup feeding and your request
following my private email to you, I am sending this out to Lacnet.
I was hired here at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City,Missouri in Dec. of
'86 to found and develop a Breastfeeding Consultation Service like the
program I started in NJ at Hunterdon Medical Center. Within a few months I
approached my "Medical Liaison" ( a pediatrician) about cup feeding. His
response went something like this..."Sure, I have no problem with it, I was
a cup fed baby. My Pediatrician, now deceased, Dr Freeden didn't want
Mother's propping bottles so asked them to cup feed instead of bottle feed."
He also informed me that our beloved Herb Davis, also a pediatrician in his
practice, had an article published in '48 supporting cup feeding. Herb just
retired two months ago.
We have been successfully cup feeding at St. Luke's since early '87... no
aspirations. We have had a baby or two admitted to our ICN because of
aspirations when bottle feeding!
Had to share.
Mary Grace Lanese
