Dear all:
Amazingly, I did a consultation with a mom recently who LOVED the nipple
shield. She is a copious oversupplier with flat nipples and nursed her
first child for over a year with the nipple shield. She wanted me to see
her second because he was a little sleepy and chewing. She had been given
16 mm nipple shields in the hospital and he barely transferred any milk.
She had a drawerful of different sizes and a big baby so I switched her to
the large shields and he guzzled down 3 oz in nothing flat. She was
delighted. If she had wanted to get off or even try without it, I would have
been right there helping her with a nipple shield-free latch. I mentioned
that she could come to support group and we could work her off the shield
when she was ready, but I bet she'll keep right on going with the nipple
shield. Every woman is different.
Bets regards,
Susan E. Burger, MHS, PhD, IBCLC
