Amen to that.
I realize that many of the things I teach women about birth are the same
things I teach them about breastfeeding. Two of my many examples:

Sometimes labor is very hard and you might wish you'd had an
epidural/cesarean/tubal ligation. What you *really* need is support and
encouragment. Likewise, sometimes breastfeeding can seem very
difficult/annoying/tiring and you'd like to quit. What you *really* need is
support and encouragement for those difficult times.

Labour has a pattern that we can recognize, but that doesn’t mean it should
always follow a chart because everyone is different. Unecessary rules and
limitations on labor can make it much more difficult. Breastfeeding does not
need to follow a set schedule either. Every woman is different and every
baby is different and there is no need to interfere, schedule, or add
anything unless there is a problem.

I also like to keep the "latch and postion" information simple. I remind
mothers that we are used to seeing babies face the ceiling to drink a
bottle, but a breastfed baby needs to face the breast on his side. Wait
until the baby has his mouth open wide - “like a baby bird” gives them the
idea - before they latch.
