update on client who was going to wean her baby

Had a call this evening asking if I thought it would be possible for her to reintroduce baby back to the breast with nipple shields. YES YES YES 

When using nipple shields would she still need to pump to guard her milk supply even though this baby has the most powerful and effective suck?
This mother greatest concern is going down the same path with cracked and damaged nipple that make breastfeeding unbearable.
I have reiterated the importance of good latch and positioning, what else should I be covering to give this women the best possible chance to breastfeed
