In this situation, I have always tried to explain the differences in
colostrum and formula (bottles "flood" the baby and they don't spend enough time at
the breast to avoid engorgement, etc) and I gently suggest that she
exclusively breastfeed 'as much as possible" in the hospital until her milk supply is
established. Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't. I wrote an
information sheet that has been used at several of the hosptials I have worked at
and everyone seemed to understand the concept.
