Jennifer,
Did you ever outright ask the young mother who surprised you, why it was
she changed her mind and her whole style?
The counselor in me has a tendency to get kind of blunt about these
sorts of things (in both directions) and I do learn a lot from it,
though it does open a can of worms sometimes.
I had a very young mom call me to relactate after ten days of not bf.
Her first child was not bf. A hundred times I thought she would quit,
as obstacles came up (Mom had flat, inelastic nipples, baby had receding
jaw and just couldn't latch, pump was too expensive and had to rent 60mi
away, etc). But she shocked me by persevering. She had the baby on EBM
in days, latching every once in a while with a shield in a week, and
exclusively bf at the breast in a month.
So I asked her why. She had two unnecessary csections, and had
channeled that anger into succeeding at bf, because she knew deep down
that her body *did* work, and this was the only way she could prove it
to herself and everyone else.
I'm still in awe.
