Have mothers permission to post.
A patient I recently worked with presented with the following history:
4 th baby,. Had attempted to breastfeed last two infants without sucess.
Both cases, even with lactation support there was never any suggestion of
expressed colostrum or milk despite nursing/pumping. In both cases though
mom got engorged when she pumped or nursed all that ever was seen was
frank bleeding.
This delivery- started working with mom immediately. Babe with excellent
latch but never could elicit even a hint of moisture/colostrum even with
pump. Engorgement set in and continued nursing/pumping only elicited
blood. I talked with the OB and we were able to get an ultasound done.
Rqadiologist report showed no ductal outlets. Filled sinuses/ milk streaks
were present and tracable but ended at nipple base.
Is this Athelia? The mother has an areola and what appears to be an under
formed/ immature nipple area.......
Mom has kindly given me permission to use the films and do a case study
but I am unsure if this is what is classified as " athelia" ? Kittie
Frantz or someone... can you answer this question for me?
Thanks
