Hi, Liz Spannraft back and now retired. There is an article in the
Illinois Nursing Spectrum Oct. 18, a cover story on a "Mother's Choice".
The cover has a slightly blurred picture of a mother nursing and
Charlotte Johnson IBCLC counseling her. Unfortunately The story
entitled "A Mother's Choice" has another photo of Charlotte with a
bottlefeeding mother on the story page. Most annoying is the caption,
which identifies her as breastfeeding coordinator without the IBCLC
credentials mentioned in the caption for the cover page. Most upsetting
is the quote from the caption next to the bottlefeeding infant,
"Charlotte. schools young mom.in the finer points of breastfeeding" .
Those of you who subscribe to Nursing Spectrum, I urge you to write the
editor with your comments. The article although well written is written
by a freelance healthcare reporter. One wonders why an LC or even RN is
not the writer?
The article discusses initiation rates and low rates of breastfeeding in
some populations. The breastfeeding education tips section in the
article will not do much to help RNs educate women on breastfeeding.
Except for Jan Barger's hints on conversations, nurses will not find the
details needed to educate.
Congrats to Charlotte, and other LCs mentioned in the article.
