Dear Friends:
I have a fabulous filing system which resembles the mythical black hole
of Calcutta............I always find a lost journal article while I am
looking for something else.
In this case, Goldman, Goldblum and Garza. Acta Paediatr Scand
1983;72:461-462 "Immunologic components in human milk during the second year of
lactation." Their conclusion is: "The present cross-sectional study of the
concentraions of certain immunologic components in human milk supports the concept
that partial breastfeeding during the second year benefits the infant by
providing immunologic factors that would otherwise be unavailable."
More information comes from a handout that I got at a presentation
given by Elizabeth Hormann years ago, and is adapted from Cameron and Hofvander
1983 (I don't know from what journal). The handout is titled "Nutritional
Contribution of 500 ml breastmilk daily towards recommended intake for 1 to 2
year old" Human milk in this second year of lactation provides 31% of the RDA
of energy, 38% of protein, 100% of vitamin A, 95% of vitamin C, 41% of
niacin, 21% of riboflavin, 26% of folic acid, and 44% of calcium.
    warmly,
