Hi all.
That's right. In years past it was common hospital policy for all
babies to be npo x 24 hrs. Not sure why.
At my hospital, most babies are sleepy the first 12-24-48 hrs post
birth and many are not interested in br fdg at all until 24 hrs old. We
are patient and wait for babies to be ready, show fdg cues. Healthy
newborns have some fat and fluid stores.
We can discuss medicated birthing practices etc. and the reasons
babies are not interested in feeding much the first day or two, but this
is the reality I work with. We are very low with interventions the
first 24 hrs, mostly skin to skin care and watching for fdg. cues.
After 24 hrs we try harder with waking techniques, side lying position.
I encourage moms to room in during the night because usually, voila!
babies display many fdg cues during the evening and night and tend to
nurse better then.
   Hope this is helpful.
