I received this email from a very nice military mom and asked her permission
to share it with you so that she could compile a ³file² of authoritative
opinions for herself and for the less-than-supportive medical team she might
encounter. BTW, I have also had to care for babies like this who I thought
received more intervention (and formula) than they needed. I will forward
your answers to her.

Thanks!

Jay Gordon

³I have been searching and searching for information about breastfeeding and
the hospital stay in case my baby is born with low blood sugar. I had
Gestational diabetes while pregnant with my son, and he had normal sugar
levels at birth. The hospital I delivered him at was a very nice hospital,
and they were very pro-breastfeeding. Since then we have moved (my husband
is in the military) and we will be delivering our new baby in a Military
hospital. I have gestational diabetes again, and this time the hospital
doesn't seem as supportive. I do not know a single mother who has given
birth there, and had a successful exclusive breastfeeding relationship.
Every baby was given formula almost immediately after birth because the
nurses said they weren't getting enough nutrients. I am even more nervous
because there is a chance my baby will be born with low blood sugar (I am
sticking with the GD diet, and finger pricking 4 times a day, every other
day per my OB, and my sugar #'s haven't been very high at all) I have done
a lot of research, and know that I can breastfeed, My big concern is that
the nurses will try and find a way to give my baby formula, and I do not
want that at all. I want to have a very satisfying breastfeeding
relationship with my new baby. My breastfeeding relationship with my son is
very dear to me (Noah is 16 months old, and still nurses on occasion), and I
wish the same for my new baby. So please send me any info you may have, or
point me in the right direction so that I can ensure that my baby will only
get the best. She deserves the best! Thank You for listening!²
