I wanted to give you an update of my week. Yesterday I met with the nurse
that took down my posters. I told her that I had heard that she took down the
posters and asked if she could tell me why she did it. She said that she felt
that the comment about higher IQ for breastfed infants would make moms who were
not breastfeeding feel guilty. She said that she had not had any families
complain but that she didn't want them to "feel guilty about one more thing" since
they were already dealing with loss of term healthy infant, ideal delivery,
etc. In talking further with her and the other clinical leader sitting in the
office, they both agreed that the poster "bothered them." They then shared that
both had had difficulties breastfeeding (she didn't feel that she had support
for problems and the other had inadequate milk supply after fertility
problems) and that they didn't feel like their kids were stupid. I listened and
empathized with both of them. Guess they needed to vent and be heard. Bottom line
was that they were feeling guilty because they hadn't been able to breastfeed so
they felt they were protecting the mothers of their patients by taking down
the offensive signs. I told her I was upset because she had not come to me and
talked about it but had just reacted and threw away the posters. She
apologized and we left on good terms.
Thanks for all the advice and support over the last few days. I am now
renewed and ready to move on and see how I can affect change in the NICU. One mom
and one baby at a time.
