What a timely post. I went for a mammogram yesterday. I had my first child
at 35 and pretty much was nursing up until I was 44. Every mammogram I had
(even my baseline at almost 37 years of age) I was pretty much lactating. To
do my baseline I waited the 4 months. They wanted to retest and it took many
months to get the appointment. By the time the apt came I was pregnant with
my second.
I waited until she was 21/2 and not nursing to much and my doctor
recommended going in for another mammogram. I was now 40. I told the tech I was
nursing and they were OK with it.
I went back for a recheck on the left and my daughter was now a nursing 3
year old. They were not to happy about it, but would do it. When she 5 1/2 I
was due for another mamo. I didn't even bother telling them I was nursing.
It was only a few times a week by then.
Fast forward to yesterday. I have not lactated in 2 1/2 years now. I
decided to tell this technician that all my previous mamos I was lactating and now
they were going to look at my breasts as not lactating. She was so bent out
of shape that I had all those previous mamos while lactating.
I told her the techs didn't have the same reaction she had to it. Should I
have waited to have a mamo? I would have been in middle of 44 years of age.
My primary physician thought it was OK due to the fact that the nursing was
infrequent at that point. I don't get some of these techs. They are working
with breasts and know nothing about breastfeeding.
