A week or so ago I heard Paula Meier speak on the NICU premature and
near-term infants. She said we need to stop regarding the 35 weeker as a
regular baby who just came a little early! They are different and usually
don't nurse well enough to set up an adequate milk supply.

She recommended begin pumping asap with a hospital grade pump, then
supplementing baby at the breast and using a nipple shield. Since she has a
99% initiation rate and something like a 60% BF at discharge rate at
discharge in her NICU, I think she knows what she is talking about. She has
written extensively about the results of her interventions. She has a packet
available of information that you can study and use. It is a bargain at $30
(and I have no financial interest in the Rush Mothers' Milk Club. No e-mail
addie :-( Ph. 312-942-6604)

For this baby, -8 oz at 6 weeks - Laurie is right, it is a medical
emergency! She needs to: 1. Feed the baby; 2. Fix the breastfeeding (use a
shield and supplementer); and 3. preserve/stimulate the milk supply.

Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
