Kathy has asked a question about supplementation rates. Good old Ross
Products provided their statistics as a 46.3% exclusive breastfeeding rate in
hospital, with an additional 23% supplementation rate (i.e. babies who received
both breastmilk and formula). This appears that in the US, 23% of breastfeeding
infants are supplemented in hospital. This is where their number of 69.5%
breastfeeding rate comes from (exclusive plus partial equals total). The
reference is:
Ryan AS, Wenjun Z, Acosta A. Breastfeeding continues to increase into the
new millennium. Pediatrics 2002; 110:1103-1109
From the perspective of the formula companies, this is excellent data, as
supplementation in hospital plus the discharge bag of formula increases the
likelihood of formula use and decreases the chances of exclusive breastfeeding.
