I'm chiming in here as the mother of three very spitty-uppy babies
who were sensitive to foods in my diet. All of them were happy,
smiley babies who grew well and only rarely had green stools. To my
knowledge, cow's milk protein is the only thing that has been shown
by research to cause reflux-type symptoms. I believe that other foods
can offend as well, they just haven't been studied yet. Soy,
chocolate, and nuts also were triggers for my babies. (Dairy is
'hidden' in a lot of products, but soy is equally ubiquitous!)
I suspect that it's not healthy for babies' guts to be continually
exposed to things that irritate them. Besides anemia, wouldn't there
be a possible risk of immune system/allergy problems? I wonder about
the long-term consequences. While restricting my diet is hard (try
going an entire holiday season without a morsel of chocolate or a
trace of butter!) I feel it is worth it if it allows my children to
have healthy guts and no long-term sensitivities.
