Dear Friends:
Hurray for LACTNET and research studies. Were the studies Nancy cites
done on human infants or other mammals?
Here's another study bolstering what Nancy reported, that labor is good
for babies.
PEDIATRICS Vol. 100 No. 3 September 1997, pp. 348-353
Neonatal Morbidity After Elective Repeat Cesarean Section and Trial of Labor
Brenda Hook*,,Robert Kiwi,,Saeid B. Amini§,,< Avroy Fanaroff*, and<W Maureen
Hack*
Compared with a successful TOL, the infants delivered by cesarean section
after a failed TOL had more neonatal morbidity and had a longer hospital stay
(4.8 ± 2 vs 3.1 ± 2 days). The odds ratio for developing any respiratory
illness after a failed TOL was 2.1 (95% CI: 1.1, 4.1), for suspected sepsis was
4.8 (95% CI: 2.6, 9.0), and for proven sepsis was 19.3 (95% CI: 2.0, 187).
Neonatal outcomes after a successful TOL were similar to routine vaginal births.

Here are some studies showing an association between cesarean section and
asthma:

Caesarean section and risk of asthma and allergy in adulthood.
Xu B, Pekkanen J, Hartikainen AL, Jarvelin MR.
Caesarean section had a strong effect on current doctor-diagnosed asthma in
adulthood with an adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 3.23 (95% CI 1.53, 6.80).
However, no substantial effects were observed for atopy, hay fever, and atopic
eczema.

Mode of delivery and risk of allergic rhinitis and asthma.
Bager P, Melbye M, Rostgaard K, Benn CS, Westergaard T.
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings do not support the hypothesis that cesarean
section or other complicated modes of delivery are associated with the development
of allergic rhinitis. However, there might be a positive association with
development of asthma--in particular, for cesarean section--that was not
explained by gestational age, birth weight, ponderal index, smallness for
gestational age, parity, maternal age, or occupation.

Obstetric complications and asthma in childhood.
J Asthma. 2000;37(7):589-94.
Xu B, Pekkanen J, Jarvelin MR.
Results indicated that obstetric complications were associated with a higher
risk of asthma among children. Those children who were administered special
procedures at birth, i.e., cesarean section, vacuum extraction, and other
procedures, including use of forceps, manual auxiliary, and extraction breech,
had an adjusted odds ratio (OR) for asthma of 1.38 (95% confidence interval
[CI] 1.00-1.92), 1.32 (95% CI 0.80-2.19), and 2.14 (95% CI 1.06-4.33),
respectively, as compared to children who were delivered normally.
