I have a question. If the only hours that count towards one's breastfeeding
consultancy requirement are ones that the person did herself, not watched,
how could an IBCLC who is mentoring make any money? Meaning if mom will have
the intern actually working with her, with the IBCLC supervising, then is it
ethical for the IBCLC to charge her normal hourly rate?

The IBLCE rules say it has to be "direct supervision" meaning the IBCLC is
in the room and paying attention. I guess the mom is getting two for the
price of one so to speak. But how does a PPLC charge if she is supervising,
not doing the consultation?

And I agree with whomever said they have had unqualified people want
mentoring. Me, too. I have had people with almost no bf knowledge want me to
help them become IBCLC. And what if you are a PPLC and the intern can not
solve the problem, say latching a difficult baby on, and the mother gets
frustrated? A PPLC can not afford to have mothers unhappy with her services.

Seems like we need lactation degree programs like those for nursing, with
classroom time, set courses, and internships under supervision. Not
something where the person has to find their own mentor, rather one through
the school that is set up in a way that benefits everyone.
