It is likely that the dentist won't do the fillings while breastfeeding
because he is planning on using "silver" amalgam fillings, which contain
mercury. The use of amalgam fillings, whether breastfeeding or not, is
becoming highly controversial. A study done by Dr. Gary Null, PhD and Dr.
Martin Fedlman, MD in 2002 points to the evidence that mercury continually
leaches from amalgam fillings at a rate 10-50 times the safe limit set the
the US Public Health Service. Mercuery does transfer into milk.
Hale's Medications and Mothers' Milk recommends against having amalgam
fillings removed during breastfeeding, but does not address the issue of
having amalgam fillings placed while breastfeeding.
