I know everything you are pointing out to me and perhaps some people will see my lactnet post as the fact that I "sold out." My point was that these sleepy, drugged babies who were not able to suckle effectively at the breast and then were losing a lot of weight were going to have bottles fed to them by staff workers, and with the ok of the pedi's. They were going to get bottles no matter what. And the bottles started immediately after birth with sugar water and then baby was kept in the nursery away from mom for 4-6 hours. When baby was taken back to mom, a good nursing session was expected within an hour or a bottle of formula given. Feeding a teaspoon of colostrum was not seen as adequate or good -- no matter what you and I believe. If it were my hospital and I made the rules, I certainly would not go to formula this quickly. I lasted there 18 months only. I had no choice and many hospitals are like this. Maybe we "should" be fighting more, but I did fight and got nowhere. No pedi support, no hospital support, for a more natural method of feeding the baby. I knew someone would come up and jump me for this method on Lactnet but I felt that others need to understand why these babies aren't learning to actively suck and therefore are fussy or angry at the breast. My intent was to show a method that will work to get drugged up babies who would get formula anyway to learn to actively suck and swallow at the breast. This is why I said no flames, please.
