Wow, Amy! I wish more of the doctors around here were like you. So many
times I talk with a mom who's having bf issues and wanting to give up.
I'll ask her what her doctor has said and I usually hear, "Oh, s/he said
it's really up to me whether to breastfeed or feed formula -- the baby
will be fine either way." Even my own pediatrician uses that line all
the time. UGGHHHHH!!

Anyway, hats off to you Amy for even bringing up the possibility of
relactation with these moms. When moms hear you mention that
possibility, I'm sure it further emphasizes just how important
breastfeeding is -- that their physician will suggest that they begin
breastfeeding again rather than continue using formula. I personally
think you're right on target with not telling those moms that the baby
will be just fine on formula -- and you should mention relactation to
all of them even if it seems to you that the mom isn't interested. Moms
need to hear about relactation as a viable option from their physicians,
not just from us "wacky" LLL Leaders! And the certificates are a great
idea, too. Who knows, maybe since you supported these moms for however
long they breastfed the baby in question, maybe they'll breastfeed
subsequent babies even longer.
