The hospital where I work as a LC is working on
becoming Baby Friendly. One of the formula companies
recently requested to invite interested nursing staff
to an educational inservice on the benefits of their
new product for pregnant women. It is dietary
supplement w/ DHA... and some of that other stuff.
This is to be held at our city's more popular
restaurants. My knee jerk reaction was that this was
another marketing to the nurses plan and we couldn't
even get them to attend the free (free to employees)
BF conference we just sponsored (Paula Meier was our
featured speaker) AND free lunch. Now, I am wondering
if I was premature and harsh? Anyone else facing the
same thing? I've never attended one of these
"educational" dinners but I have witnessed several of
the lunches the formula reps provided at my previous
place of employment. I hate being a reactionary and
want to be as objective as I can when I work. My
question: is this an unethical or "un-baby friendly"
activity to post on our unit? I don't plan to attend
but most of our maternal-child mgt. staff is cool with
the idea.
Peace,
Suzanne Bowes RN, IBCLC
