>>>I received a phone call from a mother who is in the diagnostic stage of
determining if she has Lupus - all the tests so far are coming up
positive. She is currently breastfeeding an 8 month old child and would
love to communicate with any other mothers that are dealing with Lupus.
According to what I found in the archives the usual med (Plaquenil) is
o.k.. If you know of any mothers that might like to communicate with
her via e-mail, please let me know. Thanking you in advance -

Evelyn, you may give my name and email address to the mother w/ a presumed
dx of lupus. I have lupus and was in her position 11 years. My son was
9-months old at the time I presented with symptoms and my son was still
nursing numerous times per day.
Hale (2004) rates Plaquenil a lactation risk level 2. Plaquenil was a
godsend for me. It improved the quality of my life significantly. I am
still on Plaquenil and have never had any side effects. The med is
typically offered before a confirmed diagnosis is made. (It can take years
to get a definitive diagnosis.) I remember my rheumatologist telling me
when I was starting Plaquenil that I may not notice relief in Sx for a few
weeks to months. I noted marked improvement in my Sx in just 2 weeks. I
continue to have annual eye exams while on the drug to monitor for deposits
on my retina that can lead to blindness--no evidence of that happening with
me so far.
I would be happy to talk to the mom regarding breastfeeding and/or lupus.
