Dear Friends:
Wow, Kathleen Huggins, what an opportunity. Here are two ideas.
The USA is excellent in marketing; we can sell anything to just about
anybody; we have breastfeeding promotion very well developed. But breastfeeding
support and protection are deficient in the USA. According to WHO,
breastfeeding support and protection are just as important to increasing breastfeeding
initiation and duration as is breastfeeding promotion. My dream would be to
have this person send funds towards breastfeeding support.
(I worry that the new ad campaign will have a detrimental impact on
breastfeeding because new mothers will start in the hospital, go home and have
problems, and find no one to help them. They will have a miserable time
breastfeeding, and tell all their friends not to bother. Research (I believe it was
Ekwo) findings show that mothers will be discouraged from even initiating
breastfeeding if their friends tell them horror stories. They are more likely to
choose breastfeeding if they don't know anyone who has breastfed.)
So whatever support network is in the area where this person lives could
benefit from counselor training programs, communication networks between
practitioner offices to peer counselors, and telephone services to contact new
moms. Our local group used to have a cell phone that was used by the person
covering the Hotline; we had to give it up due to lack of funds. The cell phone
made it easier for that person to do her job.
If that doesn't appeal, what about starting a milk bank?
warmly,
