I met Chele Marmet in person for the first time at the Physicians seminar this
summer- I was talking about my own daughter and said "nursing" she gave me all
her reasons for saying "breastfeeding" but afterwards I was talking about it
with Alicia Dermer who I shared a ride with- and what I felt intuitively was
that my daughter who will be 3 in Dec and has weaned and relacted mutliple
times and who never wanted pumped breast milk from any sort of container or a
pacifier etc... does not FEED at my breast she NURSES! and gosh when its my own
daughter, I'll use whatever word I like- I'm not afraid of 'certain' words- I
come right out and ask the mothers of my patients if the are experiencing any
pain in their breasts or nipples- some might think its 'better' for society for
2 yr olds to walk around talking about their "penises" and "mothers' breasts",
but I think we all can make our own parenting choices in that respect
maybe its the word "breastfeeding" thats problematic- why people can't
understand extended "nursing" or adoptive breastfeeding or even breastfeeding
after starting solids or after 1 yr- maybe we should call it "breastnursing" or
simply "suckling at the breast"
I've actually had some mothers who when I asked if they were still
"breastfeeding" they said no- but then when I asked when they stopped and if
they feel there is still some milk there (exploring if they would be interested
in relactating) they say that they do occasionally still put the baby to their
breast! (they had answered no because they felt there was no milk- so the child
wasn't actually feeding at the breast any more!) Interesting isn't it!
