I've always wondered why people don't take classes or read up on pregnancy
and childbirth, or parenting. Is it a mindset that can't be changed due to
"upbringing?" (Everything just happens, you can't change it --- certainly not my
attitude or one that my children have learned!) Maybe it's a behavior we CAN"T
change no matter how hard we try? Some of the suggestions have been great but
as someone who has been in a prenatal clinic, trying to get people to "learn,"
I have to tell you it is just not that easy. Of course repetitive information
sticks and research shows that several unfocused positive comments have more
impact that a targeted, long term intervention BUT if they aren't receptive
that day, it can be lost.
Most people research buying a car better than they prepare for one of life's
biggest challenges. Liberal praise should be given to the ones who do make it
to a class or read a book, even a crummy one. At least you know they have some
motivation to learn.
When encountering a mom who hasn't prepared at all, I used to say "OK this is
on the job training, we're gonna get through this together." Sometimes they
want the help and sometimes not.
