There is evidence that perchlorate is absorbed and concentrated by
vegetable crops, and much research has been done on lettuce in areas
downstream from Lockheed's plant. Lockheed is cooperating with at least
one major farm in trying to remediate the situation. Just because
perchlorate is very mobile in water does not necessarily mean that water
is the major source for humans. The scariest thing about perchlorate is
that bioaccumulation occurs in commonly eaten plants. Other
contaminants such as DDT bioaccumulate mostly in animals. This means
that eating lower on the food chain is not safe in terms of perchlorate
exposure.
