Barbara, sounds like something someone made up to sound knowledgeable. We
don't have any research that I know of, have never seen it in a textbook,
that combining formula and breastmilk is harder on the baby's intestines.
But we do know that giving formula changes the baby's intestines, it is the
formula that is the problem. What I see is that the new lipil or advance
formulas cause very loose oily stools. Although I have heard of one or two
moms who say regular formula is less constipating then the new ones. And I
have seen the new formulas cause ball shaped BMs, but most are loose.
Constipation problems with formula are well known. And I don't think we
really know how many ounces per day of breastmilk is going to help a certain
baby get over his intestinal problems caused by formula. LLLI has a pamphlet
called "Breastfeeding Makes a Difference" where it talks about the benefits
of breastmilk being dose related or dependant. The less human milk is given,
the fewer benefits to the baby. So a baby fed half formula and half
breastmilk will probably not benefit like the baby fed 100% human milk. (I
get a lot of experience with formula diapers from my job at WIC.)
