Thanks to Judy for raising the issue again regarding the ban on compounding
domperidone in the US. While I was on the Leadership Team of the US
Breastfeeding Committee, we spoke in a conference call to the FDA regarding why this
action was taken. The safety issue was emphasized but references FDA provided were
to studies done on non-lactating, surgical patients who were given the drug
in large doses IV. What I think is happening is an effort by the government to
crack down on importing drugs from out of the country, crack down on
compounding pharmacies, and protect a pharmaceutical company that has domeridone in
the pipeline.

There is almost no data to support that the dose and route through which
domperidone is administered to lactating women poses any significant danger to
them. Looks like manipulation by industry, with the breastfeeding mother and baby
the victims as usual.
