Amy, I certainly understand your frustration! Because you are in the
position of continuing to treat these families long term-you have some unique
challenges. For example, facing the reminder every time this child becomes ill
that perhaps if breastfeeding wasn't abandoned....might be trying. You can also
turn this around and take advantage of the unique oppurtunity this long term
association provides. Though definitely a challenge, at some point opening up a
dialogue with this mother about the reasons for her decision may help you to
tweak the breastfeeding support offered by your practice and/or help you to
have a better understanding of where these families are coming from. Most of us
practicing LCs have little contact with families once they've decided to
'quit,despite the fact that all seems fine' so any feedback that you or other
pedi HCPs in similar settings can provide would be helpful!
