I work on a mother/baby unit and this is what we do when we get a new
C-section baby that needs to go to breast, the nursery RN who is taking care
of the baby goes back to recovery and assists babe with breastfeeding, if
all goes well sometimes we leave baby back there with recovery RN, but most
of the time the nursery RN will stay back there. I agree a L&D nurse
usually doesn't have a lot of time to be watching baby and mom in the
recovery, but its not impossible. We don't have a written policy about this
but after reading your post, maybe our hospital should have one also, it
could prevent some of those first bottles being given.
Not sure if I was of any help, just sharing what we do where I work:)
