I sent the following to Lisa re her questions about maximum milk supply and
the ability to increase supply after down regulating, but I thought I would
also share it with the list.

Fascinating questions re maximum milk supply. I have had pump dependent moms
in the NICU express 12 oz. at a time 7-8 times per day. It is nearly
impossible to down regulate them. They can slowly get down to 4 pumpings per day but
still get 8-12 oz. at a crack. It is amazing. On the same note moms who have
down regulated because of poor pumping management, severe stress, mastitis,
etc. seem to have a VERY difficult time up regulating unless they get on top
of things immediately. Mostly, we don't see much success in this group if
they've gone any period of time with lowered supply. And I've had mothers who
very, very slowly have reached an adequate milk supply over 6 weeks or so. I'm
referring only to pump dependent mothers here because we can totally quantify
 their milk production.
