Hello, Christine.
I think that we can't really guarantee to this mom what will happen to
her supply. Although studies seem to suggest that estrogen after 2 months
does not affect supply, I am betting that there is much variation between women.
Just like the studies that show that the progesterone-only birth control
does not affect supply. For many women, it indeed doesn't, some even seem to
notice an increase, but many women find that it truly decreases their milk
supply, even when not started until after 6 weeks postpartum. I should think the
same variation would hold true with estrogen.
I did want to share some information that might be useful to this
mother if the estrogen does not work, before she allows a hysterectomy. My
daughter at one point in her life bled for 112 days straight (and got anemic,
because of all the bleeding). It took 4 doctors to finally find one that could
figure out what was going on. One of the treatments was the combinations
estrogen/progesterone pill, and that did nothing to stop my daughter's bleeding. The
fourth doctor was finally the one who realized that what my daughter had was a
progesterone deficiency, so her estrogen and progesterone were out of
balance. When the combination pill was used, although it added progesterone to her
body, because it also added estrogen the *balance* was still off. Dr. #4 put
her on a progesterone-only pill and it stopped the bleeding. If I remember
correctly, they kept her on that prescription for 6 months to secure her levels
and the balance, then stopped it. She has not had another episode like that
since. The mother you are working with may want to explore this possibility
with her doctors, if the estrogen does not work.
