I have permission to share following story and need help problem solving any
other options; a single parenting 32yo, gr 2 para 2, breast fed her now 8yr
old for 6mo, reports similar signs and symptoms occured with the 8yo child.
Mom reports she is mildly lactose intolerant. This infant a vag term birth,
9lbs-4oz now at 3 weeks post partum has wt of 10lbs-6.5oz with feeding
pattern minumum of 8X24 and deep latch with expected stooling pattern all
normal.
About 1 to 2 minutes into the feeding, very audible deep bowel gurgling
sounds occur and persist through a typical 15 min feed. The babe sometimes
will do a consecutive feeding and immediately after all feedings, behaviors
such as squirming, arching, taunt abdomen and fussy, to the point of parent
being unable to soothe, occur and if sleep happens it lasts only about an
hour. The maternal grandmother encouraged mom to offer formula (milk based)
at about 1week for several days. The same symptoms occurred and
constipation was added to the symptoms and after several days mom started
breastfeeding again. The 8yr old was switched to formula at 6 months with
all the same symptoms disappearing and no constipation.
Jack Newmans protocols for the colicky breast fed babe have been recommended
and tried. A dietician has seen the pair with no real ideas other than
wondering if Lactase is a factor? Mom is exhasted by the sleep patterns and
becoming discouraged about breastfeeding and how to cope. Medical follow up
with the pediatrician seeing babe weekly states, "Some babies are just
fussy".
What are we missing?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
