I believe the bilirubin affects the brain.  At low levels this is sleepy and
at high levels kernicterus :-(  That's why it is so important to wake yellow
babies and make them eat! You get into a vicious cycle of bili increasing,
sleepier, not eating, not eliminating, bili going higher and so on.  I've
also found and I've read others say, that supplementing (ie: force feeding)
a yellow baby doesn't seem to impact subsequent BF.  It's like they were in
a fog and don't remember getting supplemented once bili goes down and they
wake up.  (I don't know if that is scientific, just personal observation.)
