Hi,
When I teach teens I find that they are interested in knowing that human
milk is species specific. I tell them about whale, seal and rabbit milk and
the fat/protein content. They are very interested in the "rules" they have
heard such as what they can eat while breastfeeding,. They also want to
hear how breastfeeding does not tie them down and how soon they can use a
bottle. They want to know that it won't hurt and how to be discreet - a
video, or slides showing breastfeeding in public is nice - makes it seem
normal.
The boys like hearing about how wonderful it is to hold the baby skin to
skin, I usually teach them a little baby massage as well as some calming
techniques. I tell them how important it is to support the mom of the baby
in breastfeeding and how cool and manly they look when their baby is
breastfed. Some of the games from Linda Smiths book are really a plus to use
with teens.
If you take pizza and soda and feed them they are delighted and they will
listen a little more (use it when talking about what is ok to eat). The
teens find it fascinating to learn the size of the baby's tummy - I take in
a ping-pong ball, jaw breaker and small round candy to let them see the
size - sometimes we eat the candy as well). The teens do seem to want to
hear about how healthy the baby will be and how strong.
I have always found teaching teens is really rewarding and lots of fun!
Oh, one more thing- someone is usually talking to the teen mom about birth
control. I found the girls would often ask if that was ok. Often they are
given Depo right away. Good luck! Warmly, Judith Markham IBCLC
