Hi Kirsten,

I'm afraid that to suggest that all or most moms either ingest or not ingest
any substance, food, medicine, etc is bad for breastfeeding. There are mom's
who need to take supplements or medicines or who cannot eat certain things
while nursing, but they are rare.

IBCLCs tend to see more "problems" than lay counselors, but believe me when I
say that all most moms need in the first few weeks and months are boobs, a
baby, loads of diapers, a warm place to sleep and nutritious foods they like.
A maid would also be nice :)~

The bottom line though is that the more we can make breastfeeding normal
(needing no special anything), the better off our babies will be. This is
especially true as it impacts breastfeeding duration. Moms will do lots of
things for a short time in the best interests of their babies, but anything we
say they "must" do, that is uncomfortable, inconvenient or expensive will
shorten breastfeeding durations.

Best!
