Dear Friends:
    I am working with a mother who has chronic painful lumps. She has chosen
to pump and bottle-feed. The only way to keep the lumps soft and more
comfortable is for her to massage her breasts while she pumps.
    Her gynecologist had the same thing and says it is because she had
fibrocystic breast disease before pregnancy.
    I was wondering if this could be explained with an analogy of
diverticulitis, where pouchings in the wall of the gut collect material and get inflamed.
Could her milk ducts have pouchings that collect milk? Massage keeps these
pouchings from collecting lots of milk and getting hard and hurting?
    What do you all think?
