The trouble is that "nursing" is a term that is restricted to a small
portion of the English speaking world (is it used with any consistency
outside N America?) and I can't see it gaining any popularity in Australia.
Our mother-to-mother breastfeeding support group was the Nursing Mothers
Assoc for 35 years (nursing was used because you coun't have "breastfeeding"
in the telephone book!) and breastfeeding has never been "nursing" in any
context other than the name. I think the problem is that we don't give
enough recognition to the non-nutritional aspects of breastfeeding, we
overemphasise the significance of breastmilk but I think it is easier to
consider non-nutritive breastfeeding than breast feeding.
