Of course, most of these babies are gassy during the night, because I
always hear about it when I come in the morning. Which brings me to
another thought.
Dr. Harvey Karp's book makes a lot of sense and so far I have been able to
calm many babies. I know a lot of these babies are not gassy at all
Hi Christine,
I have been working in hospitals with babies for over 30 yrs. The best thing
that we did a few years ago was to start handing out copies of Jan Barger's
"Baby's Second Night." You can find information about her handout at the web
site below. I also tell parents that baby's most wakeful time occurs between
9 pm & 4 am (it's helpful if Dad or other helper is there to hold baby after
the bouts of feeds so mom can nap). The baby will sleep best between 5 am &
12 noon (that is when mom is should be sleeping). I explain how they can help
their baby start to change this cycle when baby goes thru a growth spurt at
10 - 14 days of age. Babies need a certain amount of milk in 24 hrs. If you
offer frequent breastfeedings during your wake time, then baby will gradually
start to change his wake/sleep times.

I also show Harvey Karp's video in my prenatal baby care class. He has some
very good information about normal newborn behavior & shows the 5 steps to
soothing a fussy baby. Couples from my classes have used this method to help get
through the second night. I have also used this when a mom is asking for a
bottle because her baby won't settle after repeated breastfeeding sessions.
