As soon as I read my own post I realized that I hadn't really said what I meant. Of course you are right and it *is* baby's intake not
production that the study refers to. But where I was going was that (as I understood it) production capacity is a function of how many
prolactin receptors are set down in that first several weeks. If a baby is taking in at 24-32 oz (or close to it) then production will be capable of
meeting demand. If a baby is taking a much lesser amount and setting those prolactin receptors are set low, then that mother may have a
harder time keping up as the baby grows.
It's confusing, I'll admit. I'll look to see if I still have the citation re the prolactin receptors.
