Pam I suspect you may be right - we don't know.
Some thoughts I've had:
- breastmilk has low protein levels so lactation should be a much much
lesser drain on the mother's capacity to maintain her own health than the
pregnancy would have been
- the amount of protein that we in privledged cultures eat is way more than
is needed. Perhaps the place to start researching this question would be
with the work of those working in the poorer areas of Africa. I'm positive
you would find answers there. I just can't quite think of the name right
now but Anne someone published a lot of research on calcium requirements
during lactation and I'm sure she has also studied the effects of low
protein intake. (Could someone please help me out with the researcher's name?)
My suggestion would be to start breastfeeding and keep an eye on the mother
- I doubt there will be any problems whatsoever with her breastmilk, and
likely the same with her own health in view of the fact that she can grow a
baby.
