In my previous post about these leading to cracked skin, I wasn't
thinking aoubt the foams that we ahd been using at the hospital
where I worked. I thought is was something totally new and much
higher in alcohol content. Where I worked we had these originally
in the hall outside every room. When a new unit was built, they
were moved to just inside the patient room. This way, you would be
wiping the foam on your hands as you introduced yourself to the mom
and she would see that you were "clean". I did like to point out to
the family that ordinary good handwashing was sufficient for them or
they would be asking where they should buy the foam! Also, while we
want moms to use reasonable cleanliness, we don't want her to become
paranoid about it to the point that she always delays attending to
baby until she can do the handwashing thing! I did find that even
these did lead to some skin dryness and would always apply a lotion
at the end of my day.
